From the Radio Times

RT sits in on rehearsals for a major dramatisation of Olivia Manning's sequence of novels, set overseas during the Second World War What do the stars of this new radio production feel about the characters they play and the overall portrait of a British couple drifting apart?

Joanna Lumley Old Harriet Pringle

"The drama allows those of us who weren't even born when the war was going on to get an idea of the absolute chaos and fluidity of those times. Men and women were shunted around all the time then, and not just those in the services. Much of it is familiar from watching the old TV version with Kenneth Branagh and Emma Thompson. But this is a fresh look at the books. Radio is always completely different because you have it in your imagination.

"The book tells Harriet's story in her own present-day existence. In this dramatisation, I play a much older Harriet, looking back and telling her story. No, there's nothing awful about being cast as Old Harriet. I'm an old-age pensioner!

"Everything one sees or reads about the war gives a great sense of `love me now, because tomorrow may be too late.' It heightened the sense of romantic involvement. Nowadays, people seem to be on mobile phones or texting one another all the time. They're never out of touch. But then, somebody says, `I don't know when I'll see you again', gets on a train and they're gone. Communications in modern life have squashed romance."

Honeysuckle Weeks Young Harriet Pringle

"She has a lot of expectations coming into marriage and, like many of us, finds it's not all it's cracked up to be. But there's a dignity in sticking with it and learning not to be quite so self-orientated. It's a sort of romantic battle between Harriet and her husband, Guy. He's an academic powerhouse; she has to do the queuing for food. And, since it's wartime, everything is last-minute and do-or-die, heightening the romantic dimension."

Khalid Abdalla Guy Pringle

"He's an optimistic, leftist, humanist, wonderful person and loving to everyone, though not a very attentive husband. The less kind version puts `exasperatingly' in front of each of those qualities -exasperatingly optimistic and so on.

"This is the first part I've had that I've been able to speak in my own, natural accent. Previously, I've played characters of Middle Eastern extraction in Spooks and The Kite Runner. My parents are Egyptian, although I was born in Scotland and went to public school and Cambridge. So, I'm not playing my ethnicity, I'm playing a character who is, like myself, an English gentleman."

James Fleet Yakimov

"He's a Russian Prince who had to leave because of the revolution. He has aristocratic tastes way beyond his means, so he basically freeloads off anyone he can. He's charming but not very bright-the latest in a long list of dim characters, like Hugo Horton in The Vicar of Dibley, whom I seem to specialise in."

Nigel Anthony Professor Pinkrose

"Coincidentally, I knew Olivia Manning's husband, Reggie, who was a well-known radio drama producer. I worked with him many times from 1960 and we became friends. I met Olivia, too.

"The novels are fairly autobiographical - Reggie and Olivia were in the Balkans together during the Second World War. I do think the fictional character, Guy, is very recognisable as Reggie. He loved everyone and cared very much about everything. I can't be sure but yes, there is a feeling that he wasn't there for Olivia as much as he might have been, although he was devoted to her."
